Cataract is the cause of 80% of blindness in Bangladesh. At present Bangladesh have some 800,000 cataract patients. 150,000 new incidence of cataract are being added every year to the existing list while only 70 to 80 thousand cataract patients are operated upon annually. In Kishoreganj alone the number of cataract patients is 61,878 while new incidence of cataract is calculated at 24,751 annually. Different providers conduct 1500 cataract operations every year in Kishoreganj. Thus, 23,251 Cataract eyes are being annually added to the backlog of 61,878 in Kishoreganj districts. Ageing is the main cause of cataract and women compared to men, are more affected by it (60:40).

Cataract surgery is the simple remedy for blindness resulting from cataract. 90-95% of cataract can be removed by IOL surgery with a high rate of success.

Nari Uddug Kendra has undertaken humanitarian initiatives for restoring sight of the poorest, disadvantaged and under-served communities in the district of Kishoreganj by curing avoidable blindness through cataract surgery. The minimum cost of one-eye surgery per patient is approximately Tk 4210, which includes Investigation (blood, x-ray, ECG etc.), Lens, Medicine Black Spectacles, Food, Transportation (to and from), organizing eye screening camps and the Surgeon's fees.

However 55% of the poor cataract patients are unable to bear even 10% of this amount.

We, therefore, seek your generous contributions of Tk. 2000 per eye for poorest cataract patients' to help them undergo surgery before they become permanently blind.
